September Guild Program:
Caring for your Textile Treasures,
with Laurel Wilson, Associate Professor of Textile and Apparel Management, University of Missouri-Columbia
Do you enjoy those television shows where people bring in some kind of antique item, and a knowledgeable person tells them what it is and how to care for it? Guild member Laurel Wilson has agreed to serve as our resident expert on textile matters and help us identify and care for our treasures.
Please bring those family heirlooms or flea market finds you've always wondered about, and Laurel will help identify them and provide tips on care and storage. We'll learn a little textile history and find out more about preserving our textile heritage. Not to mention getting to see some wonderful items!

October Guild Program:
Felting Patterns and Designs in Kyrgzstan
with Bonnie Ahrens
Winrock International Corporation, located in Arkansas, contacted guild member Bonnie Ahrens to teach felting patterns and design in a rural Aral village in Kyrgzstan. Winrock has a program which helps third world countries in various aspects of agriculture; from the actual working with crops and animals to home based agricultural businesses. They had previously brought people from various countries to observe the fiber processing business Bonnie has at her farm.
Bonnie shares her experiences, I have been out of the country once - to Cancun on my fiftieth birthday - so this would be a real experience for me; of course, I said yes! In July I spent two weeks which I will remember for a lifetime. It was like going into a time machine and and turning back the clock two centuries. The warmth of the people, the agrarian way of life and the excitement of watching the modern western world coming into this country was worth every small problem encountered on the trip. It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Kyrgzstan I visited.

The 8th Annual Fiber Retreat was held in Columbia October 1-3, 2004. The theme this year was a "Sculptural Paper Basketry Workshop" by Mary Merkel-Hess. Members of the Fiber Arts Study Group who participated in this basketry workshop will bring their projects and report on their workshop experiences.

January Guild Program: A Winter Night by the Fire*
Grab a cup of hot cocoa and a project, and sit around the fire with us and listen to fiber tales. We'll have guild members reading from books, stories, and fairy tales involving yarn, sheep, weaving, knitting, spinning, etc. If you have a favorite story you'd like to share, contact Shelda.
*Sorry, but you'll have to imagine the fire!
15 February 2005, 7:00 p.m.
February Guild Program:
Save the Sheep Slide Show & Swatch Collection from Interweave Press
Sponsored by SpinOff magazine and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, the Save the Sheep project was created to promote understanding about rare sheep breeds within and beyond the spinning community. This project was motivated by a belief that diversity of fiber types is essential to preserving the full range of skills and cultural values embodied by the craft.
The project resulted in an article in SpinOff magazine, a traveling exhibit with 29 touring pieces, an Interweave Press book entitled Handspun Treasures from Rare Wools: Collected Works from the Save the Sheep Exhibit, (now out-of-print, but available in the CWSG guild library), and this slide show and swatch collection which we will enjoy at our February meeting!
For more information, and to see the virtual exhibit, visit the Save the Sheep project at Interweave Press.
15 March 2005, 7:00 p.m.
March Guild Program:
Spring Cleaning Guild Sale
We're having a "spring cleaning" fiber sale! This is the time of year for us to sweep, arrange and polish, and at least at my house, that always results in a stack of items that I find I can live without. So we're asking members to bring items for sale that they no longer need, and to come prepared to find treasures that others are ready to move along. You can bring fleece and fiber, yarn (handspun or otherwise), basketry or paper making supplies, looms, tools, etc. Anything fiber-related qualifies! Supplies and tools only, however, no finished items (baskets, linens, scarves, hats, etc.)
In addition to letting us move unwanted items on to new homes, the sale will be a guild fund-raiser, so 20% of sale revenues will go to the CWSG treasury for future programming and operating expenses. As an option to support the guild further, you are welcome to donate up to 100% of your proceeds!
Please mark all of your items with your name and a price, and bring a list of all the items you have to sell so we can keep track of each individual's sales. We can take payment in cash or check (made payable to CWSG). Sorry, no credit cards. We'll collect funds, figure out who has sold what, calculate the guild percentage, and plan to disburse checks at the April guild meeting (if you need your check earlier, we can mail it to you).

April Guild Program:
Ancient Symbolism in Contemporary Patterning
with Merike Saarniit
Trained as an anthropologist, artist, and historian, Estonian American Merike Saarniit is also a hand dyer of beautiful yarns and a passionate knitter. She teaches workshops internationally on Estonian stitches and patterning.
As Merike has explored Estonian knitting, she has also been developing a logical and fascinating theory of the origins of the rich and diverse patterning of Estonian arts and crafts, found not only in knitting, but woven sashes, woodwork, and metalwork. In April, she will share her discoveries with us.
As Merike says, anyone who has ever taken a knitting--or weaving, or any--pattern and changed it to make it their own can relate to this. Anyone who has never done so will, hopefully, be inspired to do so with their next project!
Merike will also share some really really old Estonian folk songs that have been traced back over a thousand years - sung a capella by some old grannies (on CD).
Be sure and visit Merike's website, Liisu Yarns. Merike will again be offering workshops at Hillcreek during her stay in Columbia.
17 May 2005, 7:00 p.m.
May Guild Program: Contemporary Fiber Artists in Japan
Presentation by Sharon Kilfoyle
Join us for a slide show presentation of Sharon Kilfoyle's visits with fiber artists working in Japan today. Many of these artists are interested in continuing the traditional use of indigo and persimmon dyeing. Some create piecework from old kimono and katazome fabrics. Others design with contemporary fabrics and dyes. Like artists in America, many of them create only for their own pleasure, but there are those who make a business of their art. Come meet and be inspired by these fiber artists and their works, some of which will be available for hands-on inspection.
21 June 2005, 6:30pm
Guild Picnic
Join us for our annual guild picnic, June 21st, 6:30pm at the home of Nancy and David Finke, 203 High Street in Arrow Rock. Nancy said that she favors a potluck dinner with no particular instructions as to what anyone should bring, since it always works out and is low stress. So feel free to bring a main dish, a vegetable, salad, bread, dessert, etc. Please bring your own table service (plate and silverware). Drinks, cups, and napkins will be provided.
Mapquest lists this as about an hour drive, so for anyone wishing to carpool, let's meet at 5:30pm in the Columbia Mall parking lot near Target, out near the Northeast corner of the lot. It's usually pretty empty there. and I think we can find one another and have room to park.
If you need directions to Nancy and David's house in Arrow Rock, email Shelda.
